Obviously, this is not something ACS and Volunteer Ministries are strong enough nor well-funded enough to accomplish without the collaboration of hundreds of local leaders, funding organizations and donors. We particularly need the community organizing expertise and administrative skill of ACS affiliate agencies, Inner City programs, and church leaders across the U.S. We believe this is worth doing, and we appeal for your help to make it happen.
The Action Plan
In direct response to the call for tutorial programs to assure children’s ability to read and learn, ACS and Volunteer Ministries will mobilize the Seventh-day Adventist Church to recruit volunteers to work through its network of churches, community service centers, and schools to launch hundreds of local tutoring programs.
In the first 3 years of the Alliance for Youth Project, we successfully recruited 21 young adults who worked as full-time project coordinators launching new tutoring sites across North America. We reached objectives 1 and 2 by operating 101 sites in over 32 cities utilizing the services of 3,000 plus committed volunteers.
Presently, we are still in need of volunteer coordinators to organize projects. Coordinators receive a modest living allowance, training in community organizing and program development as well as the specifics of tutoring programs, remedial reading techniques, understanding the culture of poverty, etc. Coordinators are encouraged to live in the communities they serve in housing arranged and/or provided by the local SDA Church.
