The Presidents’ Summit on Volunteerism convened April 27-29, 1997 in Philadelphia under the chairmanship of General Colin Powell. The president of the United States and two former presidents participated along with governors, mayors, corporate CEOs and 100 national community service leaders.

The summit goal is to mobilize voluntary, charitable organizations across the nation to meet the needs of America’s children and youth. Of particular interest are children from low-income households, single-parent families and living in neighborhoods where violence, alcohol, drugs and crowded schools make it difficult for them to learn. Adventist Community Services made a commitment on behalf of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Our Objectives

This is a major undertaking for the Adventist Church. In order for this project to succeed and to accomplish the following objectives, ACS and Volunteer Ministries must collaborate fully with interested leaders throughout the denomination’s infrastructure.

  1. Mobilize 3,000 volunteer tutors
  2. Activate 100 tutoring sites
  3. Reach 10,000 children and youth
